6 Best Peach Trees To Grow In Sacramento
Gardening is my thing. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite hobbies. This makes me remember what we learned in 9th grade biology.
Whoa, I just remembered who my teacher was! Mrs. Ruedas, thanks for doing the Lord’s work. I’ve got a growing guide for gardeners wondering how to grow organic peaches at home.
66 lbs of peaches can be produced by a peach tree in a year. I can’t believe all that fruit, jam, jellies, and preserves!
Sacramento’s peaches do so well because of all the daylight we get, as well as being in Zone 9b. Peaches thrive in USDA zones 5-9. Peaches originated in China.
Are you aware that some fruit trees require cold temperatures in the winter months in order to survive? I had no idea about that at all.
There is a term for it, called “chill hours”, and peach trees need between 600 and 900 hours of straight chillin ‘each winter at a temperature of 45°F or less.
At a temperature of 75°F, peaches really ripen well and prefer extremely warm weather. And, just as you might not have known, Sacramento’s average temperature in July and August is about 75°F.
There is a chill hour requirement for each variety of peach, and this will determine when the peach tree will bloom, and therefore, when it will begin to set fruit, and when it will begin to ripen. Variety types that require fewer chill hours bloom earlier in spring than those that require more chill hours.
The best conditions for peaches are full sun and places where cold air/frost will not settle. Peaches do tolerate partial shade, but you’ll get fewer fruits as a result.
Despite the fact that I’ve read that peaches prefer light, well-drained sandy soil, I can tell you from experience that they live well in my hard, clay soil in Sacramento as long as I amend it with compost and mulch.
Frost Proof Peach Tree
If you live in a northern region, but you are interested in growing fruit, what should you do? Frost proof peach trees are an excellent choice if you live in the north.
There is no need to worry about the Frost Proof Peach being harmed by a late frost as it will remain unaffected and still produce a large harvest.
As well as this, the Frost Proof Peach is very resistant to pests and diseases, as well as being tolerant to drought conditions.
Basically, the Frost Proof series is synonymous with low maintenance, trouble-free care, making it perfect for beginners and professionals alike.

The fruit you’ll choose will be a combination of peaches, plums, and apricots from our most popular varieties, a surprise medley that may allow you to reap a harvest as early as your first year.
As we cultivated and nurtured these unique specimens by grafting these single-stone fruit selections together on a single tree, you will be able to get many different types of fantastic fruit for the price of one.
The best thing about it is that it is a healthy, hardy variety that is capable of producing fruit for many years to come.
The harvest season begins in mid-summer, which results in a great deal of fruit available for canning, freezing, cooking preserves, and baking pies and cobblers.
The best part of our Fruit Cocktail Tree is that it is self-fertile, adaptable to most soil types and matures to a manageable height of 10 to 15 feet, so it can be planted even in a tiny garden and be harvested in no time.
June Gold Peach Tree
In the first year of the tree, you can expect to be able to harvest delicious, early-growing peaches.
The June Peach Tree is known for its abundance of delicious, full-sized, fast-growing peaches, filled with a refreshing flavor and texture that melt in your mouth as soon as they are picked.
It is large enough to grow bushels of delicious peaches, yet it is just right for smaller spaces in your landscape, so it is the perfect landscape plant for both large and small spaces.
Its uniqueness comes from the fact that it requires only 450 chill hours to give you your own home-grown peaches, making it a staple that thrives without much guesswork.
How about making it even better? June Gold peaches are freestones when they are fully ripe, at which point they become extremely juicy.
The mouthwatering peaches on your June Gold Tree will be a true taste sensation thanks to its hardy, showy blossoms that are frost resistant.
Harvester Peach Tree
It is certain that during the first year of your growth, you will be able to get more peaches.
Despite its dwarf size, the Harvester Peach Tree is considered as one of the highest-yielding peach trees you can own.
The fact that it’s a dwarf variety also means that you don’t need a lot of room for it to grow year after year, especially since it’s self-fertile.
From your own backyard, you’ll be able to enjoy bushels of fresh peaches that you picked yourself.
It grows well in most soil types, is tolerant of heat and humidity, and can tolerate a wide range of soil types, partial to full sun.

Red Haven Peach Tree
The Red Haven peach tree produces one of the best tasting peaches on the market, often referred to as a favorite in the grocery store.
Nevertheless, thanks to our Red Haven Peach Tree, you’ll be able to enjoy your very own fruit at home, freshly picked, cost-effectively, and most importantly, grown naturally.
Also, Red Haven Peach Trees are disease resistant and highly adaptable, so they can survive a variety of environments that would kill many other trees.

Hi! We live in California, and our wonderful Rio Oso Gem peach tree died this spring. Our area has clay soil and we think all the rain the last two years led to wet roots and fungal diseases. We had it almost 12 years and the fruit was fabulous. How long ago did you write this article? The average summer temperature is much higher than 75 in Sacramento! Do you know where the Red Haven or June Gold peaches can be found? We love the sweet-tart flavor and freestone aspect of the Rio Oso so are a bit unsure about changing varieties without a chance to taste the fruit. Thanks for your suggestions!
Sorry to hear about your Rio Oso! You might be able to find Red Haven or June Gold varieties at local nurseries or online stores like Stark Bro’s. Both are great choices for Sacramento’s warm summers. -Plant Native Team
