• Carbohydrates– Carbs are essential for reproductive health and the proper functioning of the small intestine in ducks. Dry dog food contains lots of carbs due to the presence of grains and veggies.
• Fats– Fat is also a crucial part of a dog’s diet. Dog food provides enough fat to ducks which help in nutrient absorption and hormone production in the body.
• Vitamins– It is required for the metabolism of the body. They keep various health issues at bay and must be included in the duck’s diet.
• Minerals are required for bone mineralization and growth in meat ducks and reproductive performance in duck layers and duck breeders (H. Wang et al.).

Why is dog food not good for ducks?

Dog food in excessive amounts or as a primary meal for ducks could lead to various health problems. Ducks could suffer from obesity, a wing deformation condition known as “wing deformation” due to dog food’s high protein and fat content. Therefore, we should not forget that dogs and ducks have different diet requirements. Hence, only a limited amount of dog food is to be fed to the ducks.

We must keep the following points in mind before feeding dog food to them.

• Serve small-size bites– Too big dry dog food might choke ducks throat leading to death from suffocation. Hence, small sizes smashed bites of dog food are to be served to ducks.
• Avoid molded or rotten food– It is fundamental to not feed rotten or molded food to any animal, including ducks, as they are more prone to mold fungus and can be life-threatening to them.
• Don’t overfeed your ducks with dog food– only a small or limited amount of dog food is to be served that too once in a while.
• Check for cannibalism– Dog food might contain duck meat. Therefore, this can lead to cannibalism among ducks making them more hostile and aggressive.
