Purple flower color alone is also insufficient, because garden hybrids and other species may be purple. Ask for the scientific name, seed origin and nursery propagation history.
Older references may list eastern Canadian localities or Maine under a broad Iris setosa. NatureServe explains that Flora of North America separated those northeastern plants as Iris hookeri. A nursery label using an older name needs clarification, especially if plants are intended for habitat restoration rather than an ornamental collection.
