Prairie trillium is a woodland plant despite its common name. Trillium recurvatum rises in spring with a whorl of three mottled, leaflike bracts and a maroon flower seated directly above them. The combination is distinctive and close to the ground, making it a plant for a shaded path edge or a quiet woodland bed rather than an exposed summer prairie border.
