Curly mesquite is a grass, not a miniature mesquite tree. Hilaria belangeri forms a low, spreading layer of narrow leaves, with modest flower spikes rising above the foliage. It is one of the native grasses worth considering when an Arizona garden calls for an open shortgrass look rather than a tall ornamental clump.
