Spacing should reflect the intended view and the mature fronds, not only the trunk diameter. A narrow trunk does not mean the palm occupies a narrow space. Low-Elevation Sites and Exposure

Loulu leaves have a documented place in Hawaiian uses such as thatching and plaiting, and the name loulu is associated with an umbrella or protection from sun and rain. Hāwane and wāhane can refer to the fruit and sometimes to the palm itself. These broader loulu traditions should not all be assigned uniquely to Pritchardia hillebrandii when the historical account concerns several species.

The botanical epithet honors William Hillebrand, whose former property became part of the history of Foster Botanical Garden. This connects the palm’s name with Hawaiian botanical study and cultivation, but the species’ natural identity remains grounded in Molokaʻi’s coastal landscape.

Buy nursery-propagated plants with reliable identification. Wild collection is not needed to obtain an attractive landscape palm and can undermine the very populations that make the species special. If the goal is conservation rather than ornament, coordinate with the people responsible for the habitat and provenance requirements.
